The name "Roots" reflects my family's legacy along with my commitment to grounding our work in what matters most — a mix of safe, holistic, modern, evidence-based care combined with deep respect for the traditions, cultures, and the values each family brings to their pregnancy and birth space.
Our Mission
Our mission at Roots Midwifery is to provide personalized, holistic midwifery care that supports women and families throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We deliver relationship-based, evidence-informed care grounded in midwifery tradition, clinical excellence, and cultural humility. By centering listening, education, and advocacy, we work to improve maternal outcomes, advance equitable and respectful care, and ensure families across Greater Boston feel seen, supported, and empowered.
Our Vision
Roots Midwifery envisions being Greater Boston’s most trusted midwifery practice, recognized for both clinical excellence and the depth of care provided to every family. We are building a model of maternity care where personalized attention, cultural respect, and evidence-based practice shape safer, more affirming pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences. Improved outcomes for Black women and babies are essential, and reductions in maternal morbidity and mortality must be achieved. Through education, advocacy, and compassionate service, care is redefined so every family can access support that honors their needs, values, and journey.

As a Black woman and certified professional midwife, founder Stephanie Johnson understands firsthand the importance of culturally responsive care and the devastating impact of maternal health disparities. She's witnessed how the right support can transform birth experiences, and how families of color and other marginalized communities are often denied the respect and personalized attention they deserve. This drives everything we do at Roots Midwifery.
